Who are you and what is your role at the company?
I amter Claes Hugosson and is the owner and CEO of the company EDT AB. Since there are quite a few of us in the company, everyone gets to help where needed, not least me, who sits on several chairs. I also design and construct all the machines we manufacture.
How and when did you come into contact with Nordtrafo?
We build various machines and we need transformers for them. I have had a very long collaboration with Nordtrafo. I got to know the current owners' father, Lennart, a lot of years ago and after he passed away I have continued to do business with the sons. I order almost all the transformers we need from them.
How did Nordtrafo end up at the top of the list of possible suppliers of transformers?
Nordtrafo is one of the few Swedish companies that still manufactures transformers on a larger scale. Even though the price picture is somewhat higher in Sweden than in Asia, for example, the proximity is worth a lot to me. I work based on a philosophy that means that I have selected a smaller number of suppliers that I want to cooperate with and from whom I order the majority. Great consideration is given to technology and availability optimization, which are important to us, especially in these times. It is more important to have a good relationship with a good supplier, or a partner as I would like to call it.
Has your contact with Nordtrafo led to any changes or improvements?
The contact with Nordtrafo has developed into more of a collaboration between our companies than just a purchasing and supplier relationship.
Can you give an example of what the collaboration with Nordtrafo might look like?
We at EDT AB have designed a machine that is used to test cables that lie on the seabed, so-called HVDC cables. They lead, for example, from the mainland to a wind turbine, or from one country to another. There is a high demand for this type of cable, but it also places high demands on the cables being tested properly before they are installed on the seabed, as they are not often replaced at that time.
A whole bunch of tests are required for these cables and one of the tests is to heat the cable i.e. send a lot of current through it. It turned out that there was no good solution for heating HVDC cables, so we decided to design a device that solves that problem.
As part of the device, we needed a specially adapted transformer made of very coarse copper to deliver enough current, and we developed such a transformer with the help of Nordtrafo. Today, we bend the copper winding for Nordtrafo, who then builds the transformers for us. It's a collaboration that works very well.
How do you think the collaboration with Nordtrafo works in general?
I think the collaboration works very well. Nordtrafo are very accommodating and helpful. Nothing feels impossible to them and they are very flexible towards us as a customer. We have sometimes had to make adjustments and changes to their products due to our customers having very high demands. On these occasions, Nordtrafo has always been there to help us with adjustments without any hassle. This means that we can always deliver a product that our end customers are satisfied with.
As I mentioned earlier, we want to have long-term partnerships with a few selected and reliable suppliers who always deliver as they should. Nordtrafo is one of these suppliers.
